On our server we make use of the excellent Defense Shields mod by Darkstar. More information on this mod can be found here.

Essentially, your shield HP is determined by your current max available power, up to a cap set by your grid's total integrity. Each block in the game has an integrity value - you can view this by adding a block to your hotbar and holding it in your hand, your hud on the right side of the screen will show it's integrity value. Shield HP is then divided across the volume that the shield bubble covers.

If you adjust the recharge rate of your shield and the total HP changes, you are currently-limited by your available power. Add more power to increase your shield HP.

If you adjust the recharge rate of your shield and the total HP does not change, you are currently-limited by your grid's integrity. Add more mass to your grid to increase your shield HP.

To maximize a grid's potential shield HP, assuming the same amount of power and mass, you must make the grid as condensed and compact as possible to get the smallest bubble volume possible.

Defense Shields are not perfect, as can be seen on our Server Transit information page, there are some bugs that exist, especially when warping between systems. We do not list or explain all possible bugs with the mod.
